Tesla Model S Gets Software Update to Limit Speeds

Tesla Model S fatality leads to new software update offering the option to limit speeds.

Tesla has been mired by reports of bad factory conditions, bizarre leadership methods by the CEO, Elon Musk, and faulty autopilot systems that have led to deaths. Recently, it was reported that a driver in Los Angeles was sitting in their Model 3 at a stoplight when it burst into flames out of nowhere. Now, Tesla is answering some concerns with its latest software update, a speed limit feature that locks in certain speeds following the death of a teenager in a Tesla Model S.

Slow It Down

This update is in response to the crash that included the Tesla Model S crashing at an excessive rate. The speed limiter feature aims to lock in speeds and not let drivers go past certain limits. The speed limit mode for Model S and other Tesla models is available now and can be set between 50-90 mph.

The new feature is dedicated to the teen who died in the high-speed crash, Barrett Riley. The police determined that the excessive speed (clocked in at 116 mph) played a factor in the fatality, which included Riley's friend, both 18 years old.
