Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has announced plans to ban all gas-powered cars by 2030.
Following her earlier announcement to ban all diesel cars by 2024, this plan emphasizes the city's commitment to reduce emissions and reverse the effects of climate change.
Paris residents have bristled at the idea, which calls for new cycling paths, a new monthly program banning traffic from historical Champs-Elysées Avenue, and the introduction of new rental bicycle and electric car fleets to encourage residents to go green.
"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases," said Christophe Najdovski, a deputy city mayor.
The new policies reflect the city's growing issues with air pollution. According to 2016 Argus trade publication data, there are 32 million household cars in a country of 66 million. Higher temperatures have exacerbated Paris' air quality issues, which hold 80 percent higher air pollution levels than comparatively sized cities London and Berlin.
Only Athens had a worse air quality rating, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
