Sometimes, the road is boring. Other times, it doesn?t disappoint.
For one trucker with a keen eye, the highway provided something extra interesting. Take a look at this beast ? it?s a truck that?s been converted into a custom-built locomotive. It?s complete with a main lantern, a cowcatcher, smokestack, whistle, coal car, and an awesome back and brass color scheme.
At first glance, it might seem like a one-off creation by some train-obsessed man in his garage. Well, as it turns out, this isn?t some hack job. Rather, it?s the official mascot of Purdue University, located in Lafayette, Indiana.
It?s named the Boilermaker Special and is modeled after a Victorian-era locomotive. This particular ?train? is the seventh version of the Boilermaker Special, coming after a long line of similar mascots dating back to 1940.
Boilermaker Special VII has been in service since 2011 and appears at Purdue?s sporting events and other school functions. It can also be seen around Indiana at parades and festivals helping promote the university. The train was built by Wabash National, a manufacturer of semi-truck trailers, that?s also located in Lafayette.
