This incorporated town is northeast of the county seat in Independence, alongside the state’s Blue Ridge Highlands and on the musical heritage trail called The Crooked Road. People come here for outdoor adventure and possibly, some French fries.

What to Do in Fries

Original a mill town with textile mills and cotton mills in the Blue Ridge range, Fries is now a popular area for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, biking, wildlife sighting, horseback riding, camping, rock climbing, tubing, and hiking! A true nature lover’s paradise, Fries is the starting point for the New River Trail.

This small town in Grayson County presents Main Street, the central hub for all things Fries, Virginia. Complete with the famously photographed Fries Dam, a post office, Fries River Park, and The Cafe in Fries.

New River Trail State Park

Situated 15 minutes from Main St. and Grayson St., New River Trail State Park is a 57-mile linear park that spans from the northeastern section in Pulaski to the southern section in Galax. The park treks along an abandoned railroad that follows the historic New River for 39 miles through four counties.

Complete with guided horseback rides, hikes, bikes, and more, the park boasts areas for boats to launch, a horse arena, fishing spots, and campsites. There are multiple places to access New River state park, which is easily accessible from Charlotte (2 hours), Knoxville (3 hours), and Winston-Salem (1 hour).
