Formula One is set to bring in new overtaking maneuvers in 2019. Not everyone is happy.
In an attempt to increase overtaking in the upcoming 2019 season, Formula One is set to adopt new aerodynamic regulations. According to The Guardian, the FIA confirmed rule changes that would be underway for next year. The regulations were met with some resistance by the majority of the teams, but Formula One is pressing ahead regardless.
After this season’s opening race in Australia, Formula One began devising plans to enhance overtaking, or passing, in races. Currently there are only five maneuvers in the league, and Formula One wants to alter that. Some key changes to the current overtaking maneuvers are a simplified front wing intended to direct air inward rather than outside the front wheels, reducing the turbulent air for following cars; a wider and deeper rear wing; and simplified front brake ducts with no winglets.
Timing is Everything
A vote was held this past Monday, which is perfect timing because that was the last day that regulations could be passed without unanimous approval. Smooth, Formula One, smooth.
Force India, Mercedes, Williams, and Sauder are a few major teams who support the new rules, but there’s still plenty of resistance from many of the other major racing teams.
Formula One sporting director, Ross Brawn, has been researching these big plans for some time, initially hoping to get some regulation changes in 2021. The proposals have been supported and pushed by Formula One and its owners, including Liberty Media, with hopes of improving the sport and the attention altogether.
Brawn looks at these proposals as part of a major step for Formula One. “It’s important to note that the decision has been taken after an intense period of research into the FIA’s proposals, which were made with the support of Formula One and, conducted by a majority of the teams,” he said.
