A new relationship sees two entities striving for a better battery.
BMW Group and Solid Power, a rechargeable battery developer, have created a partnership to build solid-state battery technology for future BMW long-range electric vehicles.
No word was given on how BMW Group will assist Solid Power, other than it will work collaboratively on research and development efforts and combine in-house BMW expertise to advance solid-state battery safety, performance, and cost programs.
“Since the company’s inception, the Solid Power team has worked to develop and scale a competitive solid-state battery paying special attention to safety, performance, and cost,” said Doug Campbell, founder, and CEO of Solid Power. “Collaborating with BMW is further validation that solid-state battery innovations will continue to improve electric vehicles. We’re looking forward to working with BMW on pushing the limits on developments around xEV batteries.”
According to Solid Power, solid-state batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries, which contain a liquid electrolyte that is prone to damage at higher temperatures and flammability while overcharging or in an accident.
Solid Power’s batteries comprise of proprietary inorganic materials that carry an energy load up to three times greater while cutting the costs of making lithium-ion systems vehicle-friendly.
Other perks cited include higher temperature stability, cycle life, lower weight, and reduced manufacturing costs.
Started in 2012, Solid Power branched out of the University of Colorado at Boulder as a spin-off company, working out of a 7,000 square-foot facility at the Colorado Technology Center in Louisville, Colo. , specializing in cell production and devices. In early Sept., it received an undisclosed amount in Series A investments from A123 Systems LLC, an advanced lithium-ion battery manufacturer.
