The 3 New Features of the 2019 GMC Sierra That Have Our Attention

Trucks are pulling all the stops this year, and the 2019 GMC Sierra is no exception.

The GMC Sierra Denali and SLT are redesigned for the 2019 model year, and they sport a medley of exclusive features that is sure to appease all truck enthusiasts.

Director of GMC Exterior Designs, Mark Noone, comments on the latest Sierra, "Its unmistakable design embodies the essence of GMC, while advancing the brand's core styling elements — rooted in inherent capability — with a new expression of its signature cues."

Yeah yeah, but here's what we really liked about the 2019 GMC Sierra; needless to say, it looks promising.

MultiPro Tailgate

The cargo bed is undoubtedly one of the most important elements of a truck, and GMC engineers came up with an ever-accommodating tailgate to enhance the hauling experience: the MultiPro Tailgate.

Altogether, the MultiPro Tailgate features six functions:

  1. Primary gate
  2. Primary gate load stop
  3. Easy access
  4. Full-width step with ability to hold 375 pounds (seen below)
  5. Inner gate load stop
  6. Inner gate with work surface

Designed to cater to a number of situations, this new tailgate is industry leading and expected to provide "premium truck customers the ultimate flexibility."

Carbon Fiber Bed

We first got wind of a potential carbon fiber bed in the Sierra late last year, and the rumors are now confirmed: The Sierra Denali will offer the GMC-exclusive carbon fiber box. GMC Vice President Duncan Aldred states, "In 116 years of making GMC pickup trucks, our industry-first carbon fiber box is the toughest and most durable pickup box we have ever made."

Aptly named the CarbonPro box, it is 62 pounds lighter than the steel bed. It features "best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance, making it the most durable pickup box in the segment."

Diesel Engine

New for the model year is a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel engine. While we have not yet received specs, GMC says this new machine will build on the Duramax turbo-diesels in the Sierra HD and Canyon. It will also come equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

This new powertrain joins the already-confirmed pair of engines: the 6.2-liter and 5.3-liter V6.

"The heritage of the GMC brand is rooted in full-size trucks, of which the Sierra is our cornerstone, with our SLT and Denali models contributing 87 percent of our total crew cab sales," Aldred said. "The next generation Sierra caters to these unique customers who demand a premium, innovative truck that supports their professional and personal passions."
