Nissan to Show Off Drive-By-Brain System at CES

If you ever wished more drivers would use their brains to control their cars, Nissan agrees.

At next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nissan promises to show off technology that will better integrate drivers with their cars using brainwaves.

While it's fun to imagine a distant future where we only need to think about where we want our cars to go, Nissan sees a more immediate use for brainwaves as supplementary information for your car's safety systems.

In theory, Nissan's engineers say, your there's a lag between when your brain realizes you need to brake and when your foot actually presses the brake pedal. It's a fraction of a fraction of a second, for sure, but to modern computers, it might as well be an hour.

Before your right foot even begins to move, the car's computer has already begun to actuate the braking system. Or begun turning the front wheels for an upcoming curve.

Again, in theory, it's an amazing amalgam of brain power augmenting computing power. Instead of attempting to invent sensors for autonomous cars that can mimic humans, why not use humans as the sensors?

In practicality, will it work? We look forward to seeing demonstrations at next week's CES.
