Ferrari Going Electric with New Supercar

Ferrari, known for its high-revving V12 engines and iconic exhaust notes, says it's developing an electric supercar

Ferrari's CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a Bloomberg article that the Italian automaker was impressed by what Elon Musk had done with Tesla but, "... it's doable by all of us." But don't expect just any battery-powered sedan from Ferrari. Marchionne said his company will build the world's first electric supercar. The company already builds the mild-hybrid LaFerrari that pairs a 6.3 liter V12 with 161-hp electric motor for 0-62 times of 2.4 seconds.

Fans of Ferrari can also look forward to the company's first attempt at an SUV. By 2020, Marchionne said, Ferrari will offer the world's fastest SUV.

The CEO also predicted that by 2025 fewer than half the world's cars will be powered by internal combustion engines.

Should Ferrari build an electric car? Tesla's lineup is amazingly popular at luxury-car prices. Should it build an SUV? It's certainly worked for Porsche despite what diehards had to say about that carmaker's sportscar lineage.
